Graduating high school is a very exciting and adventurous time for a young person. This means that they are about to embark on part 2 of their lives so to speak. Deciding what to do after high school is a very important decision as it will have a significant influence on a persons future whether permanently or temporarily. When a person starts to pick their occupation of choice, you will find that many decisions enter and exit the head. However below is a list of considerations to think about while making that decision as it helps address the realities of job searching and job maintaining;
- Consider things that you are passionate about, if you where to do something that your not passionate about for the rest of your life than can you really say that you are going to be satisfied, let alone happy.
- Consider the job market, if what you want to do is not in demand or the job openings are very few and far in between, then you may want to reconsider your choice. Sure you may be passionate about it, but you don’t want to be unemployed for the long term either.
- Consider repayment. While money wont matter if your passionate about what you do, you also want to make enough to lead the life style that you want and be able to take care of obligations when they arise. Passion is important but so is sustainability.
- Consider the future, is what you want to do going to still be active in the future. We have seen many jobs be replaced by technology and robotics. Therefore if a job market research report suggests that your selected occupation may not be active in 5-10 years down the road, again you may want to reconsider.
- Always, Always, Always have a backup plan. There are no guarantees in life, which means you must have an escape route in case if your primary one gets shutdown. One key is to open as many doors and windows as you can possible.
Being able to to do what we are passionate about for a living is not a impossibility or a dream, but a delayed reality. While most of us would not be able to live our dream right after high school, it is important to remember that staying on track is what will help us obtain that dream. - Write down your goals and dreams. Research has shown that if we write down our goals and review them frequently, then we are more likely to obtain them as opposed to just saying or thinking them.
- Create a plan. No goal is obtain without a plan. Find out what it exactly is that you want to do, find out what you have to do to get there and create objectives that will help you achieve what you need to do.
- Stay focused by keeping motivated. It has been said that when we lose motivation there is a high chance that we may become discouraged, bored and will discontinue pursuits or our goals. Find out what gets you motivated to pursue your goals and engaged in it frequently to ensure that you don’t loose momentum.
- One way to keeps doors and windows open in your life is to keep on learning and developing. Life never stays the same, therefore you must never stay the same. If life advances and you don’t, you will be left behind
